Sleep Tips
The following suggestions have been gathered from personal
experience and the experience of many others who have had difficulty
sleeping.
1.
Perhaps the most important thing we can do for ourselves if we
are having difficulty sleeping is to establish a regular daily
routine of helpful habits which will go a long way to return
us to great sleep every night.
2. Exercise in the late afternoon or after dinner
is very important for good sleep. It helps relieve the stress
of the day, aids digestion, and lightens the mind. And it will
make us tired and ready for going to bed at an early hour.
3. Many people find that eating a light to moderate
dinner, at least 4 hours before bedtime, is very effective. That
way the digestive system is not working hard all night -- allowing
us to sleep solidly. But be careful not to eat too lightly --
getting hungry in the middle of the night may keep us awake!
4. Going to bed early is probably the single most
important factor in setting the stage for a good nights' sleep.
Have you ever noticed that around 9:30 pm (or earlier) you start
to feel sleepy? That's because this is the time of the day when
the natural biorhythm of life is suggesting that we call it quits.
If we listen to our body's message, we will be doing ourselves
a big favor by going to bed.
5. Make the last half-hour before going to bed
a quieter time -- light reading, light music, bedtime stories
for the children, etc. The mind needs an unfocused time to unwind
--then sleep will naturally come soon and will be undisturbed
by the mental pressures of the day.
6. Give the feet a real treat -- many people find
massaging the feet with sesame oil or olive oil and then taking
a warm bath is a great way to unwind, forget the pressures of
the day and become so sleepy they have to crawl to bed.
7. Making your bedroom a sanctuary for sleep is
helpful too. Keep all your financial reading, all the topics
that get your mind spinning, in another room. When you enter
your room at night nothing should remind you of things to do
or things unfinished.
8. Make your bedroom comfortable in all ways.
Keep it orderly and clean. If you like, allow a little fresh
air in...a bedroom that is too hot or stuffy can make you restless.
9. Many people have found that the use of aroma
oil to be very effective in bringing on the sandman. Lavender
Oil, in particular, works well. The oil is placed in an electric
diffuser or place three drops on a tissue near your face. The
pleasant aroma settles the mind and promotes sound sleep.
10. Certain herbal teas are excellent for calming
the mind before sleep. Your local natural food store might be
a good place to ask about calming teas and elixirs.
11. Lastly, I will always remember the advice
given to me when I was a part-time salesman in my college days.
An older gentleman who was training me learned I wasn't sleeping
well so he shared his sleep secret -- "When I get in bed at night
I put all my worries at the foot of the bed -- and tell them
to stay there 'til morning".
.....sweet dreams.....
